I lived among pickpockets for seven years altogether. The first thing I would emphasize is that there is a lot of team work. For example three people or more might gradually unzip your bag, and the so-called "ghost" will take out your valuables. With modern technology be careful at ATMs because they will spot where the money goes. They will refer to your bag and get your money as you are a busy crossing. Never put your phone out on a bench when watching any performance or just chilling out. There are people on bikes who will scoop up your phone in seconds. Always maintain a distance if you encounter someone asking for directions. Put your valuables in several places and at the front so you can see any attempts. In bars or cafes be careful when someone gets chatting - you are a real easy target if drunk.

Thanks for the list! I always thrift when I travel and this will make my upcoming trip so much fun. You can always recognize an inexperienced thrifter, especially at estate sales. They get sooooo excited and way overpay for things that you want to tell them, "Honey, they are everywhere and much cheaper than that." But as long as it makes them happy, that's all that matters.

I have three "tricks": (1) EVERYTHING goes in a money belt under my clothes, (2) my phone is in my hand or in an inside coat pocket zipped shut, and (my favorite) (3) when I go to Paris I take along a couple of super cheap "throw away" wallets with worthless cards and a dollar or two in cash clearly visible in my back pocket. Several times I have had these stolen, then I laugh all the way back to the hotel wondering about the conversation when the crooks realized they are the victims!!!

I enjoy going to a Michelin starred restaurants when budget allows. Unfortunately, it is Europe centric. They have guides for a handful of cities in the U.S. ( not sure about Canada). I don’t believe the chef who says he isn’t interested in a Michelin star. It guarantees a steady clientele. If he got one he would include it in all his branding, like all the other restaurants that get one or more.

The petition scam happened to my husband while we were walking around the Tuileries Garden-a bunch of young girls surrounded him. I had to stick my hand inside the circle and pull him out! When they finally disbanded, we noticed the zipper on his fanny pack was opened! Thankfully, his wallet wasn’t taken but that was irritating to say the least. We also encountered pick-pocketers on the metro-a man and woman both dressed in Gucci!! 😡 Despite those incidences, Paris was absolutely wonderful!

Incredible the police are so useless. I heard when they arrest these people they just move on to another capital city such as Madrid from Paris. Its easy to blame the victim but some get knifed and beaten up so its hardly their fault.

Another scenario I saw in touristic areas are people trying to show you how they make bracelets. They ask you to do,it directly on your arm. It’s a double risk because you can be raided while you stand there but also at the end they ask for money stating that now the bracelet in on your arm and they cannot take it out. Anyway, one thing to keep in mind is that they are very skilled at pickpocketing and as stated they are rarely alone. So following those tips is important.

Nice video! Do you already have an exit strategy ready for when you get to your goal? 1200 kcal intake a day is very low and my worry would be that your body is going to adapt to those fewer calories. Meaning that your maintenance intake may also be significantly lower than you might think. Are you planning on reverse dieting or anything like that?

Very good advices and it’s true that pickpocket are in the tourists aeras, not where we live. I live at Gambetta next to the exit of Père Lachaise cemetery and never see pickpocket there or in my work place in Bourse. But, for the first time in my life, a pickpocket has been caught with a hand in my shoulder bag because it cannot be fully closed. 2 passengers in the subway at Louvres saw him and told me. I laughed in his face because i only have papers in my bag. It’s important to avoid the phone in the metro in touristic aeras, to avoid putting precious things in exterior pockets of a backpack, to avoid using use a bag that can’t be closed fully or easily opened. I wear my bag in front of me for years and even buy beautiful bags that are weared across the shoulders. My purse, phone, identity card, visa are all in my constant supervision. For the pickpocket, they are young teenagers or adults coming from eastern countries of Europe like Romania. They are slaves used and abused by criminals network. As a lawyer, i defended some of them as a young lawyer taking criminal cases as a court clerk (payed by the state case by case but independant and free to have other clients) especially the false deaf girls. Ten years ago, they were even operating on ile de la Cité in front of the old court of justice. When they were arrested, they give a false name, alway the same, which is the name of their boss. That shows how much this man was dangerous to ask them to give his name. Their life is a hell and they make some tourists journey a hell too.

makes you wonder what the hell the police are doing? it's not hard for the city to find these thieves and illegals. guess they don't care.. that's unfortunate. you are tourists. HELP NO ONE. anyone asks you.. JUST SAY, NO ENGLISH.. NO ENGLISH.. keep walking.. never keep money or credit cards in a wallet in a bag.. always keep them on you.. either zipped up inside breast pockets or in front of you in your jeans or around your next under your shirt... get chains for your wallet.. have them chained in your bag.. so even if you are a victim and someone gets hold of your wallet in your bag.. its chained to the inside of your bag. stay safe...

As a person that has strong Asian features, I usually have a hard time approaching people (even those in hospitality, lol) for help. Literally running away from me as I approach until I speak French. Most people I know (that doesn't speak French) who visit France either for work or leisure generally don't have a good time. But my experience is mostly good since I speak the language even if I am not very good. Good point on never expecting locals to accommodate you especially if you cannot communicate efficiently. As a Filipino, we are totally different as people here are mostly very welcoming and we'd accommodate anyone as much as we could. Before visiting France, i know most people could be "cold" but it's really different when you experience it. But since I have set my expectations, I just tried my best to be independent and make things work. Paris is a beautiful city if you know where to look. I have no problems touring alone, bonus if i meet people along the way who would be patient with my franglais, lol. Would suggest to be on a group tour with a french-speaking guide if you speak 0 french for a better experience especially going there the first time.

On Day 1 of our visit to Paris my friend and I sat on a bench in a park, maybe Tuileries Gardens, to get our bearings and figure out which direction to go when we were approached by a group of young men who started waving papers in our faces and speaking very loudly and insistently. No idea what they were saying but I realized I could feel my phone sliding out of my pocket. I started yelling and my friend says I karate-chopped the guy's arm. They all took off running because by yelling I was drawing attention, which of course they didn't want. Fortunately, they were not able to get anything. Bienvenue a Paris!

Franco-American here French mother American father US army! The best way to move around France is to do so with someone who knows France the secound best is to learn to stand your ground without fear when you say no mean it look at him in the eyes when you say no with a pinch of nasty behind your no, and yes women can did this here in France this is in NO way come-on to Frenchmen however not looking at him can be don't be shy if your street-wise from a big city stateside this will easier to pull off! Never no matter what you see or hear never ever let people on the street know you have money when you do there is a target on you never open your wallet unless a police officer in uniform as you for ID! Hold your head up high when you walk look where your at look at where others are at never walk into open places where there group of people walk around them not through them, but look at them let them see your looking at them without holding your eyes on them just enough so he knows you saw him don't stop walk keep moving even if he talks to you even if he begs you for help keep moving you not here to save him! Never shake hands with anyone you don't know keep moving he follows you keep moving don't answer his questions! If he speaks English there is alreafy a target on you keep moving don't look back keep moving until you don't hear him behind you! Find someone who knows the French to tell you if you look American and what can you do to look less American like cameras and camera bags are bad cameras with a long lenses super, bad backpacks bad, name band backpacks super bad, cute backpacks even worst; women in high heels very bad women carry their handbag the wrong way 1000 times worst if your in heels your not able to run him, however you will look cute having your handbag taking away from you! There is a big diffence from having a target on you, and having a bulleyes on you learn to not do both, and France can be fun! Good luck! New subscriber here and a thumbs up!
